Top 10 places to visit in Switzerland

May 2021

01

Lucerne

I know I am biased about this, but I truly believe that my hometown in the heart of Switzerland is the most amazing destination: The medieval Old Town with the old city wall, the hip New Town neighbourhoods and the proximity to nature. My tip: Lake Lucerne. Perfect for an after-work swim on a hot summer day or a boat ride to one of the mountains surrounding the lake (with beauuutiful views, cable car rides and hikes).

02

Lavaux

I like to think of the wine region in the south west as the francophone pendant to Lucerne. Quaint cities like Montreux and Vevey, gorgeous Lake Geneva, views on the alps and the Montreux Jazz Festival await you. And the train ride from Bern to Geneva might just be the most beautiful there is.

03

Valle Verzasca

In the italian speaking canton Ticino there are plenty of tourist attractions. But the Verzasca valley has to be my favourite. I went on a school trip there in 9th grade and we hiked along the Verzasca river to Lavertezzo with its famous roman bridge.

04

Bern

After Lucerne, the little known Swiss capital is my favourite city. It’s once again the beautiful Old Town, but also the laid back atmosphere and the friendly people. And finally, one of my favourite summer activities in Switzerland is swimming through Bern in the Aare river.

05

Engstlenalp

I got to know this secluded summer destination through my friend Kim. Her dad leases an alpine hut there and we got to stay with him a couple times. This is a real life Heidi experience! Waking up to the cow bells ringing and stepping outside to a view of waterfalls and  the alps. Needless to say there are awesome hiking paths as well.

06

Adelboden

Another alpine destination, but a little more accessible and touristy. The village in Bernese Oberland is still very authentic and offers many options for outdoor activities all year round. I stayed at The Cambrian and it’s one of my all time favourite hotels!

07

Basel

Basel wasn’t on my list of top destinations until I met Gina. She re-introduced me to her hometown with its international flair and laidback riverside walkway. And then there is the cathedral “Münster” with an awesome “Arch of Whispers” – trust me you gotta try it out!

08

Grisons

The biggest Swiss Canton is home to the only national park in the country. There are so many incredible nature sights to explore and delicious game sausages to eat.

09

Grindelwald / Brienz

This is a tie between two better-known destinations. Grindelwald is an awesome place for outdoor activities all year round – but in my opinion a little too accommodating to tourists, so it’s lost a little of its authenticity. Brienz on the other hand is still a quaint little town with a beautiful lakeside walkway.

10

Medieval towns

I know this is somewhat of a cheat, but there are just too many gorgeous old towns in Switzerland! Aarau, Neuchâtel, Thun, Chur and St. Gallen being my favourites 😀
